In one of the most popular online games, Fortnite, ESET has uncovered a new way of cheating. Criminals take advantage of the players’ desire for currency, rare weapons, and equipment that could give them an edge, and offer a whole arsenal of fake goods. When a player clicks on a link in a fake store, they are asked to enter their username and password on a new page. Thus, attackers gain access to the game account.
To make the deception look more natural, the store simulates a connection to the servers and displays all information about the items in the cart. To complete the purchase, you need to enter the full card details – outwardly, this procedure is identical to any purchase on the Internet. The victim is warned that the site owners do not have a license to distribute content in some countries, so they need to obtain billing information.
It should be noted that the scheme looks very convincing: criminals send notifications to users that no operations with the card will be performed. The site is even indexed on Google, and links to it diverge on social media and gaming communities.
Fortnite belongs to the battle royale genre (battle royale), the mechanics of such games involve the battle in a limited area of a group of players with one winner.
