Google developers plan to add native support for the WireGuard VPN protocol to Android 12. That is, it is not the VPN itself, but a kind of platform that makes it work. WireGuard was created by well-known information security researcher Jason A. Donenfeld of Edge Security. Its development supports the most modern cryptography standards, thanks to which it manages to encrypt traffic that passes through users’ devices as efficiently as possible while providing the highest level of performance.

The key advantage of WireGuard is that it consists of only 4,000 lines of code, which makes it easier to audit it for possible bugs, vulnerabilities and hidden opportunities. This is a real record for the industry. By comparison, the current VPN protocol that Android uses, OpenVPN, is 100,000 lines long. In fact, we are seeing a 25-fold reduction in the number of lines that form the protocol. This has never happened before in the VPN market.
WireGuard’s utmost simplicity ensures that there are no hidden VPN protocol capabilities and no double bottom. Thus, you can count on the fact that the traffic of users, which they decided to encrypt for security purposes, will indeed be encrypted in a reliable way, and will not be sold, transferred, or disclosed to third parties. This is very important for a VPN and coupled with the highest level of performance due to the lack of unnecessary mechanisms, WireGuard is becoming a preferred method of protecting data than OpenVPN or IPsec.
How to Protect Traffic on Android
Although WireGuard is available on Google Play for free, it is important to be able to distinguish between VPN and VPN. After all, in fact, this is just an encrypted tunnel, which requires its own VPN server to navigate. You can create it yourself, but it is a very complex process that involves using the terminal and knowing the commands. Therefore, if you do not know what VPS, LAN, or OpenVZ addressing are, it is better not to get involved in this business – for your own good.
By adding WireGuard to Android as a standard feature, Google will not make VPN enabled by default, but will simply make the protocol compatible with its operating system. That is, you, as now, will need your own VPN server, but thanks to native integration, everything will work faster, more efficiently and require minimal user interaction.
